Planning permission granted for £3m South Shields retail development
Plans for a £3m retail park development in South Shields have been given the green light by councillors.
South Tyneside Council has granted planning permission for the proposals, backed by developer Modo Bloc, which would see the regeneration of a brownfield site off Claypath Lane and the A194.
The developer is planning to deliver three 1,205 sq ft units alongside a Starbucks drive-through and separate electric vehicle charging bays.
One unit has already been let with the remaining two available either as standalone units or as a combined space of 2,410 sq ft.
Work is now underway to find a contractor for the project, with the aim to begin construction before the end of the year. The development is expected to be completed by the middle of 2024.
George Jenkins, managing director of Modo Bloc, said: “The site has been abandoned for some time, so we are excited to be breathing life back into this area. It’s the perfect roadside location for modern, high-demand business units and we’re already receiving widespread interest.”
He added that Modo Bloc is continuing to look for other commercial development opportunities in the area. Earlier this year, the firm secured planning permission from Sunderland City Council to transform a brownfield site into a £2.1m development, housing a Tesco store and a Cooplands unit.
