Aldi opens 1,000th UK store as it eyes expansion
Aldi has opened its 1,000th UK store at Lion Shopping Park in Woking, as the value supermarket chain eyes an additional 500 stores across the country.
The retailer has taken occupancy in a 19,575 sq ft unit at a former Currys | PC World store.
Aldi will also be opening a further 20 stores before the end of the year as part of its £1.3bn two-year investment plan.
Aldi’s Woking store, which was opened by Olympic gold medallist swimmer Rebecca Adlington, becomes one of over 150 of the retailer’s supermarkets in the South East.
Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley described the opening of its 1,000th store as a “huge milestone”.
“The next phase of our expansion will involve another 500 new stores over the coming years. It is a long-term target and is not a ceiling to our ambition to have an Aldi store close to everyone in the UK”, he added.
Stripe Street acted on behalf of Aldi. Morgan Williams is the retained letting agent for Lion Shopping Park.
