BrewDog closes 38 pubs after £33m acquisition by US firm

3rd March 2026 | Jack Oliver

BrewDog has closed 38 of its pubs after it was acquired for £33m by a US-based firm.

Beverage and medical cannabis company Tilray has purchased the company’s UK brewing operations, intellectual property, and 11 of its pubs.

Administrators said that over 480 jobs have been lost and 38 bars have been closed after they were not included in the deal.

This comes just weeks after BrewDog – which had operated approximately 60 bars in the UK alongside its breweries – drafted in consultants from AlixPartners to oversee a sales process. AlixPartners were then appointed as administrators on Monday.

The company said it had taken the decision in order to focus on the company’s “long-term strength” amid a “challenging ecconomic environment.

AlixPartners said there had been “significant interest” in BrewDog, but it had not received any offer which would have rescued the company in its entirety.

Tilray will now take control of facilities including BrewDog’s brewery in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, and its national distribution centre in Motherwell, Lanarkshire.

BrewDog’s 18 franchise bars in the UK and internationally will continue to operate as usual.
