Plans submitted for former Brum bank retail transformation
A former Santander bank in Birmingham city centre could become the home of a number of retail and residential units.
New plans submitted by Moseley Properties look to transform the site at 25 Union Street into five retail units with apartments built above.
Santander left the site in 2019.
The city centre building was then sold in 2022, with a guide price of £960,000 believed to have been exceeded.
The vacant unit is part of the grade-II listed City Arcade, which was constructed in 1890s.
A supporting statement from The Heritage Studio read: “The building has been lying vacant for a few years and has fallen into disrepair, the proposed alterations and refurbishment will facilitate long term sustainable solution for the designated heritage asset’s future and is considered to enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area.”
The wider arcade has seen a number of closures in recent years, whilst a nearby WHSmith had closed in 2018 and a Sainsbury’s supermarket opposite had shuttered in 2021.
