First Amazon till-less grocery store closes
Amazon has shut the doors to its first till-less grocery store in the UK just two years after they opened.
Amazon Fresh in Ealing Broadway closed alongside two other sites, in Wandsworth and East Sheen, over the weekend.
Having opened in March 2021 during the COVID pandemic lockdown, the Ealing Broadway store was the first of Amazon’s ‘just walk out’ concept in the UK. The design allowed customers to scan a code on a smartphone app which would automatically bill them when they left the store.
While Amazon said it was assessing its portfolio of stores, the opening of new outlets is likely.
“While we decided to close three Amazon Fresh stores, it doesn’t mean we won’t grow – this year, we will open new Amazon Fresh stores to better serve customers in the greater London area”, Amazon said.
