Former Cardiff Debenhams set to make way for £17m city square

Landsec has lodged plans to create a £17m public square on the site of the former Debenhams at St David’s in Cardiff.

The former department store – which is currently being demolished – will make way for a 102,041 sq ft city square, with a raised terrace with space for two restaurants.

The proposals also include plans for a splash pad and play park, and there is potential for the site to host markets, street food vendors, and other events.

Debenhams closed its Cardiff store in 2021.

Helen Morgan, centre director at St David’s Cardiff, said: “This investment means we can unlock the potential of this currently under-used area and bring life and value back to this part of Cardiff once again. With new experiences for people and more opportunities for brands, the square will enable St David’s to contribute even more to Cardiff’s thriving city centre and growing economy.”

The planning decision expected to be made by the end of the year, with Landsec targeting a summer 2026 opening for the park.
