Lidl takes former Wilko store off Sutton High Street
Lidl is set to open a new store within a former Wilko unit at 78-82 High Street in Sutton.
The supermarket retailer has agreed a 20-year lease with Sutton Council for the unit, which will span 28,000 sq ft at ground floor level.
Lidl has now begun construction of the new store, which is set to open early next year.
Max Clapton, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “We’ve seen demand for our products continue to rise in Sutton and are excited to serve even more of the community here. Our second store will offer an improved shopping experience for residents, create more jobs and builds on our continued growth throughout the capital. We’re excited that the fit-out works are underway and be a step closer to opening. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our journey so far, we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors which are on track to open early next year.”
Councillor Jake Short, chair of Sutton Council’s Housing, Economy & Business Committee, added: “It’s great to see Lidl joining other big names like Pret a Manger, Popeye’s and Pandora, who have all recently opened in our borough’s main high street. Sutton town centre is bucking the national trend and we have very few empty shops and our footfall is increasing. This is good news for both local residents and businesses. It’s also really good news that Lidl have chosen to open a second store in our town centre and will bring the vacant former Wilko’s unit back into use.”
Lidl was advised by GCW.
