Matalan has announced the appointment of Ben Smith to the role of chief trading officer, a newly-created role.

Smith joined the clothing retailer as interim buying and merchandising director in March, following a career spanning 25 years within the value retail sector.

Prior to joining Matalan, he was worked as trading director for Pep&Co and has held a number of senior roles at Primark between 2011 and 2021. He has also previously held the role of head of buying for menswear at Peacocks.

Smith will report to Matalan’s chief executive Jo Whitfield, who said: “Ben’s extensive and proven track record within retail and executive trading roles will benefit Matalan as we enter our next phase of growth with confidence. This new senior position will enable our focus on strengthening our commercial proposition and offering the great quality and value that our customers trust us for at Matalan.”
