Metrocentre unveils plans for rooftop sports pitches

Proposals to create a number of rooftop sports pitches at Gateshead’s Metrocentre have been submitted to councillors.

Commercial small-sided football provider Powerleague is looking to transform the roof of one of the scheme’s car parks into a sporting destination.

A planning statement details the creation of eight five-a-side football pitches, four padel courts, and a pavilion building.

The pitches would be used for amateur leagues, parties, social events, and coaching, and would be operated by Powerleague.

Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, senior asset manager for Metrocentre, said: “We’re excited to be working with Powerleague to bring this popular attraction to the centre.

“The plans submitted today are part of the centre’s strategy to enhance the offer and build on the range of activities and leisure facilities available to our customers.”
