Subject to planning approval, the project will now include an Argos Local Fulfilment Centre, a 15,000-square-foot gym, and a retail space.

The new distribution centre will aim to provide residents with a selection of more than 20,000 goods for same-day home delivery or pickup from local Click & Collect locations.

According to Sainsbury’s, if the proposal is approved, 100 additional employment will be generated. Job opportunities would be available in a variety of roles and levels in several operational divisions. Sainsbury argues that the project will keep the site busy after B&Q moved to Stane Retail Park last year.

If the proposal is accepted, construction may begin as soon as later this year. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “The proposals we are submitting represent a major investment into the Lightship Way area which will support local economic growth.
