Mixed-use Bristol shopping centre redevelopment given go-ahead
The redevelopment of a Bristol shopping centre into a mixed-use scheme has been given the green light by the Government.
Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle is set to make way for 30 retail units and up to 800 flats after council planning permission was granted on 5 July.
Following an assessment of the scheme’s policy compliance, the Government has opted not to intervene on the the redevelopment. The proposed scheme, which is some places will be as high as 12 floors, has faced opposition from protestors who have threatened legal action.
The redevelopment of Broadwalk Shopping Centre is being led by the Redcatch Development Partnership, a joint venture between BBS, Melburg and Galliard Homes.
The partnership is looking to attract a variety of retail and leisure operators to the scheme – which will be called the Redcatch Corner – including a cinema and essential services such as a local supermarket, pharmacy, and dentists.
Developers are now hoping to secure grant funding to ensure additional affordable housing on the site.
Francis Hilton, spokesperson for the Redcatch Development Partnership, said: “For us, this independent review of the planning application is a vindication by the Secretary of State that these design proposals are appropriate for the regeneration of the Broadwalk Shopping Centre.
“We are still very conscious that some residents have concerns about the proposals and we hope to continue to work with them as we bring forward the detailed applications for each building over the next few years.”
