Developer named for ambitious Solihull regeneration project

Muse has been named as the preferred developer for the ambitious Mell Square regeneration project by councillors in Solihull.

Working with Solihull Council, Muse will look to deliver a transformation of Mell Square over the next decade, creating an improved retail offer, an expanded night-time economy, and new high-quality housing.

Under the first phase of the project, set to get underway by autumn 2025, the town’s vacant House of Fraser department store will be redeveloped.

The council had taken control of Mell Square in 2021 as a means of delivering its Town Centre Masterplan. The masterplan identifies a number of development opportunities to enhance the area’s offer and visitor experience.

The redevelopment will focus on attracting new restaurants, bars, and retailers, delivering enhanced public spaces, creating a mixed residential neighbourhood, and creating high-quality and sustainable buildings.

Councillor Ian Courts, lader of Solihull Council and portfolio holder for the economy, said: “Today’s announcement marks a crucial milestone in our plans to transform and reenergise the heart of our town centre.

“Solihull enjoys a well-established reputation as a vibrant, attractive and welcoming destination for high quality shopping, business and leisure. With a proven track record of attracting high quality occupiers and investment, Solihull is one of the best-performing town centres in the country. However, as retail habits and the way we use our local centres continue to change, we need to ensure what we are offering also evolves. It’s important that we plan and invest now so that Solihull town centre remains an exciting, thriving and accessible place for people to enjoy.”
