Female-led Indian restaurant Darjeeling Express upsizes in Soho

Award-winning Indian restaurant Darjeeling Express has opened an upsized space at 36-40 Rupert Street, in a gateway location between Soho and Chinatown London.

Spanning 5,600 sq ft, the operator’s new location sits alongside a number of restaurants including The Palomar, Speedboat Bar, and Evelyn’s Table.

Darjeeling Express has moved to Rupert Street from Soho’s Kingly Court, allowing for an expanded service featuring outdoor seating, a dedicated private dining space, and a larger kitchen across to accommodate over 150 covers from lunch until dinner.

The all-female staffed Indian restaurant will serve its regional-inspired home as well as style Indian dishes including Kosha Mangsho, the restaurant’s Bengali-style slow-cooked mutton curry, Prawn Malaikari, Methi Chicken, and Calcutta Kati Rolls.

Emma Matus, head of restaurant leasing at Shaftesbury Capital, said: “This relocation from Kingly Court to Rupert Street reflects our dedication to supporting the strategic growth of popular, forward-thinking brands. The restaurants on Rupert Street create a transition between Soho and Chinatown, and what they all have in common is the ability to marry innovation with authenticity, and take flavour inspiration from across Asia. Darjeeling Express does that so well, a female-led restaurant with a unique take on regional Indian cuisine, and we’re so proud to be part of their journey.”

Asma Khan, founder of Darjeeling Express, added: “Our upsized Rupert Street restaurant marks a huge milestone, allowing our powerful female-only kitchen to bring homestyle Indian cooking to even more people, in such an iconic location within the capital. The ongoing partnership we have with Shaftesbury Capital has been pivotal for our strategic growth, and I’m honoured to now be part of such a strong line-up on Rupert Street.”
