Plans for a £48m dual-branded hotel in Gateshead’s quayside have been approved by local councillors.

An application for a nine storey, 344 room combined hotel was submitted by developers Ask:PATRIZIA and given the go-ahead by Gateshead Council earlier this week.

Split between Novotel and ibis, the hotels will be located on a vacant 0.5 acre site at Baltic Quarter, and will feature a gym, restaurants, bars and meeting rooms.

The property will be operated by Accor and managed by Vine Hotels.

Gateshead Council estimates the hotel will see over 75 full jobs will be created, with the dual-branded hotel accommodating 210,000 visitor nights a year and contributing £13m to the local economy.

Peter Udall, Strategic Director, Economy, Innovation and Growth at Gateshead Council said: “We are delighted to see the Novotel and ibis hotels receive planning permission as they are an essential part of the delivery of the Gateshead Quays developments.”

“With the transformational impact on the visitor economy that these developments will bring, the region will need more accommodation to provide for the increased visitor numbers. This marks another milestone towards the delivery of these great regeneration schemes.”
