Greggs and Sainsbury’s eye more concessions after debut launch
Greggs has opened its first concession in a Sainsbury’s petrol station forecourt in Biggleswade, with the two retailers expected to make more collaborations later in the year.
The new store will open from 6am to 9pm daily, and will allow refuelling customers to choose from Sainsbury’s convenience range as well as Greggs’ menu of baked goods.
Tony Rowson, Greggs property director, said the bakery chain is diversifying its retail estate as part of its “ambitious” property strategy.
Rhian Bartlett, food commercial director at Sainsbury’s, added that the supermarket giant was looking to transform its takeaway offer with “top brands”.
The two retailers are also looking to reduce food waste, with both chains connected to food donation networks with hundreds of local charities, enabling surplus food from stores to find its way to those in need.
Greggs has said that it has a “strong” openings pipeline for 2023, and has worked with brands such as Primark to deliver new concepts with other retailers.
