Retail park footfall hit particularly hard amid widespread strike action

16th March 2023 | Jack Oliver

Wednesday (March 15) saw a drop in footfall to noon of 11.1% compared to the week before, as a number of different industries took strike action.

According to data from MRI Springboard, retail parks were hardest hit, seeing a footfall dip by 21.3%, while city centres saw footfall levels fall by 9.6%. Central London was an outlier, recording an increase of 7.1%.

Mass walkouts saw around half a million London Underground drivers, Amazon workers, teachers, civil servants, doctors, lecturers and BBC local journalists take industrial action on Wednesday.

The ongoing disputes over pay, pensions, job conditions, and cuts, are likely to continue if the Government cannot seek a resolution.

The decline in footfall on Wednesday has increased significance as it comes off the back of reduced footfall the week prior, which fell by 13.9% due to adverse weather.
