The Eden Project resurrects hotel plans

9th January 2023 | Phoebe Dobke

The Eden Project is returning to plans to add an eco-friendly hotel warmed by underground rocks.

Co-founder Sir Tim Smit told the Oxford Farming Conference; “We’re going to build a hotel at Eden. It’s going to be accommodation for the greatest hot water pools in mainland Europe.”

Smit said the plans, which were benched during the pandemic, specified that only locally sourced materials would be used. The project is considering using hemp as an environmentally friendly material and is in talks with Wasp, an Italian company specialising in 3D printing with clay and other biocompatible materials for building construction.

A spokesperson for the Eden Project has said that the hotel would be “an exemplar of regenerative tourism and positive social impact, with the aim of making it climate-positive, beyond net zero”.
